Großer Hub deckt Motorhaube und Dach schnell ab, kleiner Hub arbeitet an Spiegeln und Sicken kontrolliert. Der Ablauf ist fast immer derselbe: Rotationspolierer, hartes Pad, hohe Drehzahl, und nach zwei Bahnen stehen Hologramme im dunklen Lack, die vorher nicht da waren. Fang stattdessen mit einem Exzenter mit Freilauf an und übe an einem alten Karosserieteil vom Schrottplatz, wie sich die Maschine an einer Kante verhält. Das kostet einen Nachmittag und nimmt dir den Respekt vor dem ersten eigenen Panel. Wenn dir nach einer Saison der Abtrag zu langsam geht, ist der Schritt zur kräftigeren Bauart begründet. Der Motor treibt eine Welle, die Welle trägt den Teller, und der Teller dreht sich um genau diese eine Achse. Jeder Punkt auf dem Pad läuft dabei auf einer festen Kreisbahn. Das bringt den höchsten Abtrag pro Minute und die geringste Toleranz gegenüber Führungsfehlern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBeim Exzenter sitzt der Teller nicht auf der Motorachse, sondern versetzt daneben auf einem Lager. Der Antrieb schwingt ihn auf einer Kreisbahn, die Eigendrehung kommt allein aus der Reibung am Lack. Zwei Bewegungen laufen also übereinander, und die zweite kann jederzeit aussetzen, ohne dass die erste stoppt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDie Zwangsrotation nimmt dieselbe Schwingung und koppelt die Eigendrehung fest über ein Getriebe dazu. Der Teller dreht sich, egal wie stark du drückst. Damit arbeitet sie spürbar schneller als der Freilauf und behält den weichen, überlagerten Bewegungsablauf, der Hologramme von vornherein unwahrscheinlich macht.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFür die Kaufentscheidung heißt das: Die Bauart bestimmt das Verhalten, nicht die Leistungsaufnahme. Eine kräftige Freilauf-Maschine bleibt an der Kante trotzdem stehen, und ein sparsamer Rotationspolierer trägt trotzdem ab. Wer Maschinen nach Watt sortiert, sortiert am eigentlichen Unterschied vorbei.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDazu kommt die Baugröße. Neben den Geräten mit Ø150 mm gibt es kompakte Maschinen mit Ø125 mm und kleiner, die an Stoßfänger, A-Säule und Spiegelgehäuse überhaupt erst herankommen. Die Bauart bleibt dabei dieselbe, nur der Radius wird kleiner und der Griff schmaler.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eDer Freilauf verzeiht Fehler, die Rotation nicht\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDer freilaufende Exzenter ist die einzige Bauart, die ihren eigenen Abtrag zurücknimmt, sobald die Führung nicht mehr stimmt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDie Eigendrehung des Tellers hat keinen eigenen Antrieb. Sie entsteht aus dem Widerstand zwischen Pad und Lack, und sie endet, sobald dieser Widerstand zu groß wird. In der Szene heißt dieser Zustand Stall: Der Teller schwingt weiter, dreht sich aber nicht mehr um sich selbst.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEin Stall ist kein Defekt, sondern die eingebaute Notbremse. Zu viel Anpressdruck, ein verkantetes Pad, eine schmale Sicke unter dem Teller: In allen drei Fällen sinkt der Abtrag schlagartig, statt zu steigen. Übersetzt: Die Maschine wird genau an der Stelle harmlos, an der ein Rotationspolierer gefährlich wird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBeim Rotationspolierer passiert das Gegenteil. Steigt der Druck, steigt die Reibung, und mit ihr steigen Abtrag und Wärme im selben Moment. Die Maschine folgt deiner Hand ohne Rückmeldung, und ein Kippen um wenige Grad reicht, damit die Tellerkante eine sichtbare Spur zieht.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDer Preis für diese Sicherheit ist Zeit. Ein Freilauf-Exzenter braucht für dieselbe Kratzertiefe mehrere Durchgänge, wo die Rotation einen fährt. Für ein Fahrzeug im Jahr ist das die richtige Rechnung. Wer jede Woche fremde Lacke aufbereitet, kommt an der schnelleren Bauart nicht vorbei.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDie Zwangsrotation liegt bewusst dazwischen. Sie behält die überlagerte Bewegung des Exzenters und nimmt ihm die Notbremse weg, weil das Getriebe den Teller unter jedem Druck weiterdreht. Damit kommst du schneller durch die Fläche und musst die Kanten wieder selbst im Blick behalten. Acht Millimeter bewegen wenig Fläche pro Umlauf und arbeiten dafür punktgenau. Einundzwanzig Millimeter decken eine Motorhaube in einem Bruchteil der Zeit ab und laufen ruhiger in der Hand, weil sich die Schwingung auf mehr Weg verteilt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMehr Hub heißt mehr zurückgelegter Weg pro Minute und damit mehr Reibung. Auf einer geraden Fläche ist das ein reiner Gewinn. Die Hersteller stimmen beides aufeinander ab, und genau deshalb ist der Teller kein beliebig tauschbares Zubehör.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAus unserer Praxis reicht für das eigene Fahrzeug eine Maschine mit fünfzehn Millimeter Hub vollständig aus. Kommt später ein zweites Gerät dazu, ist der Sprung auf einundzwanzig Millimeter für Dach und Motorhaube der sinnvollere Zuwachs, nicht ein weiteres Gerät derselben Klasse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWärme im Klarlack entsteht zuerst an der Kante\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eNicht der Abtrag ist beim maschinellen Polieren das eigentliche Risiko, sondern die Reibungswärme, die an den falschen Stellen entsteht.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eJede Bewegung des Pads über den Lack wird am Ende zu Wärme. Der Klarlack einer Serienlackierung liegt bei rund vierzig bis fünfzig µm, also etwa der Hälfte eines menschlichen Haares, und er wird weich, lange bevor er sichtbar Schaden nimmt. Weicher Lack lässt sich schneller abtragen, und genau dort kippt die Kontrolle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAuf Kanten, Sicken und Radlaufbögen liegt von Haus aus weniger Material. Beim Lackieren fließt Lack von der Kante weg, an manchen Stellen bleiben nur zwei Drittel der Schichtdicke stehen. Dort trifft also das dünnste Material auf den höchsten Punktdruck, den die Maschine erzeugen kann.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEin Rotationspolierer bringt an so einer Stelle in Sekunden zusammen, was auf der freien Fläche Minuten dauert. Der Lack wird zuerst matt, dann bräunlich, und danach hilft nur noch Neulackierung. Der freilaufende Exzenter reagiert an derselben Kante mit einem Stall und macht schlicht nichts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDer Kantenschutz selbst ist banal und wird trotzdem übersprungen. Kanten, Zierleisten und Emblemränder mit Kreppband abkleben. Das Pad nie mehr als zur Hälfte über eine Kante laufen lassen. Das ist Arbeit für geübte Hände, und in dieser Disziplin ersetzt kein Exzenter die Rotation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eDrehzahl, Sanftanlauf und der richtige Stützteller\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eZwischen zwei Maschinen derselben Bauart entscheiden die Elektronik und der Teller darüber, wie ruhig das Pad am Lack liegt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDie Drehzahlvorwahl ist die wichtigste Stellschraube. Niedrige Stufen verteilen die Politur und arbeiten an Kanten, mittlere Stufen tragen ab, hohe Stufen gehören ans Finish auf großer, gerader Fläche. Eine Maschine ohne Vorwahl zwingt dich, jeden dieser drei Schritte mit derselben Einstellung zu fahren.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eKonstantelektronik hält die eingestellte Drehzahl auch dann, wenn du drückst. Ohne sie fällt die Drehzahl unter Last ab, der Abtrag wird unregelmäßig, und du korrigierst instinktiv mit mehr Druck, was die Sache verschlimmert. Merkst du daran: Das Ergebnis wird von Bahn zu Bahn ungleichmäßig, ohne dass du etwas anders gemacht hast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSanftanlauf verhindert, dass die Maschine beim Einschalten Politur quer über Scheibe und Nachbarpanel schleudert. Das klingt nach Komfort und spart im Alltag jedes Mal eine Nacharbeit. Dazu kommt die Auslaufbremse, damit der Teller nach dem Loslassen steht, statt noch über den Lack zu wandern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGewicht und Griffform entscheiden darüber, wie lange du sauber arbeitest. Eine Maschine, die du nach vierzig Minuten nur noch festhältst statt führst, kippt irgendwann auf die Tellerkante, und ab da polierst du Kanten statt Flächen. Ein zweiter Griff und ein tief liegender Schwerpunkt sind deshalb kein Komfort, sondern Ergebnissicherung.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDer Stützteller ist Verschleiß- und Abstimmungsteil zugleich. Ein gedämpfter Teller legt eine elastische Schicht zwischen Antrieb und Pad, gleicht Wölbungen der Karosserie aus und nimmt Vibration aus dem Griff.
