Dashboard care with Top Star Ts: matte instead of greasy plastic

Heating air has been tormenting and drying out your cockpit all winter. Now, the first real spring sun is shining through the windshield, adding UV stress. If you don't give something back to the dashboard now, in two to three months you'll see micro-cracks, fading around the vents, and a dull matte haze that no wash will remove.

Koch-Chemie Top Star Ts is a silicone oil-free care emulsion with Daimler approval, UV protection, and antistatic properties. It leaves a silky matte protective film on plastic and rubber in the interior, without later interfering with paint or glass work.

What Top Star Ts is and does

Top Star Ts is a silicone oil-free care emulsion from Koch-Chemie for plastic and rubber in the interior, with Daimler approval, UV protection, and antistatic properties. This clearly categorizes it as a care product, not a cleaner or a high-gloss dressing.

The key difference to classic cockpit sprays lies in the carrier formulation. Instead of a silicone oil film that migrates after a few days and leaves streaks on windows or painted trim, Top Star Ts builds a protective film that interacts with the plastic. The result is matte-silky rather than greasy-shiny, and it stays where you apply it.

Added to this is the UV blocker. Interior plastics primarily age due to two factors: heat and UV light through the glazing. The Daimler approval is more than just a marketing acronym. It signifies documented material compatibility on OEM plastics, meaning that neither plasticizers are leached out nor does the matte finish change after several applications. The film also has an antistatic effect: dust adheres less frequently to the dashboard, extending cleaning intervals.

Pre-clean plastic, apply Top Star Ts, buff dry with microfibre

Care is always step two. First, degrease and dry with Mzr all-purpose cleaner, then spray five to ten milliliters of Top Star Ts onto an application sponge and apply. This is the order in which most applications fail.

Specifically, the workflow is as follows: Interior surfaces are pre-cleaned with Koch-Chemie Mzr all-purpose cleaner diluted 1:10; for old cockpits with nicotine or skin grease deposits, you can go up to 1:5. Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and let dry completely. Only then comes the care. If you apply Top Star Ts directly to an uncleaned plastic, you fix the surface contamination in the protective film and, after a few days, get the patchy areas and water marks typical of this application error.

For the actual care, spray five to ten milliliters onto an application sponge, not directly onto the dashboard. This prevents drips, uneven application, and overspray on the windshield and steering wheel buttons. Evenly spread the sponge over the dashboard, door panels, and center console, let it act for thirty to sixty seconds, then buff with a dry microfiber cloth in one direction until no film residue is perceptible.

At cool interior temperatures, i.e., if the car has been outside overnight, allow it to soak in a little longer, otherwise the application will be patchy. It is more sensible to bring the car to a moderate interior temperature for fifteen minutes in the sun or with the heating on before care. From about fifteen degrees surface temperature, the care film settles evenly; below that, the typical streaks appear after drying, which many users falsely attribute to the cloth quality instead of the material temperature.

The spray head is a separate topic. None is included in the delivery, because the variant with a spray head does not suit every application style. If you want it ergonomically, add the appropriate Koch-Chemie Star Canyon CHS-3AN spray head from the range. It fits the 28/400 thread of the Top-Star bottle, sprays finely, and seals itself during storage.

If you don't have Mzr on your shelf, you can achieve comparable pre-cleaning with Koch-Chemie Pre-Cleaner B Vb at 1:10 or with Green Star Gs Universal Cleaner at the same dilution. Both make interior plastics grease-free without later undermining the care film. The important thing is that any residual cleaning water is completely wiped off, because Top Star Ts runs out silky matte on a dry surface, but pulls cloudy on a damp one.

When choosing application material, the open-pore sponge wins against classic microfiber. A dense microfiber cloth weave absorbs too much product and distributes it unevenly; a sponge only absorbs as much as comes back to the surface. Only during buffing does a long-fiber, clean microfiber cloth come into play, removing the excess care film and setting the final silky matte finish. This cloth is then washed cold and without fabric softener, otherwise the fabric softener component will end up on the treated surface at the next appointment.

Silicone-free, Daimler-compliant and antistatic

Three properties that not every cockpit spray has. Silicone oil-free makes Top Star Ts compatible with paint and glass work, Daimler approval proves OEM material compatibility, and the antistatic protective film binds dust less frequently. These three points are not a marketing trio, but each has a concrete practical effect.

Silicone oil-free first means that no volatile silicone oils outgas, which later settle as a wafer-thin film on the inside of the windshield. This film is precisely the reason why, in many cars, the inside of the windshield fogs up again after three weeks, even though it has been cleaned. Second, that paint polishes and ceramic coatings on the exterior paint are not later contaminated by oversprayed care mist. Anyone who first cares for the interior and then polishes the exterior in the detailing workflow regularly encounters this with silicone cockpit sprays in the car.

Daimler approval is the most honest quality seal in this segment. It is only given after the care product has been tested on Mercedes-Benz documented interior plastics over several application cycles, including material compatibility, matte finish stability, and heat behavior. In practical terms: you won't damage a cockpit plastic part with Top Star Ts, even if you apply it a bit too generously a few times.

The film has an antistatic effect due to a slightly conductive component that dissipates static charge over hours. On an untreated dashboard, the charge constantly builds up again while driving, and dust flies directly back onto it from every air current. With the protective film, the surface feels cleaner for longer, which is not noticeable on a single day, but at the latest at the next interior cleaning appointment: less preliminary work, because the film has paved the way for the next care.

Over thirteen verified Trusted-Shops reviews confirm the application experience. The silky matte surface, the pleasant subtle scent, and the feeling that the interior "looks like new again" are repeatedly mentioned. A star rating is not very informative because it becomes outdated as soon as the next reviewer cluster comes in. The consistency of the mentioned properties is important.

What these three properties bring together is a clearly measurable durability. On a properly pre-cleaned dashboard treated with Top Star Ts, the silky matte finish remains stable for eight to twelve weeks, longer for rarely used garage vehicles, and at the lower end for vehicles exposed to full summer sun with constant air conditioning dryness. This is the order of magnitude in which a detailing care interval in the interior makes sense. More frequent care is neither necessary nor better, because the care film from two consecutive applications does not stack.

Deliberately omit steering wheel and pedals

The steering wheel, pedals, and gearstick are deliberately omitted. The silky matte protective film reduces grip there and is not intended for safety parts. Even silicone-free care becomes problematic on moving parts as soon as the hand or shoe returns to the treated surface.

This is the most important application rule and at the same time the most common mistake. Leather sections on the steering wheel, pedal surfaces, gear knob, and handbrake lever remain untreated. They either need no care at all or, in the case of leather, a dedicated leather balm. Top Star Ts is plastic care and not universal care. Anyone who deviates from this will have a slippery knob on the next gear change and less pedal control on the next hard brake.

Second honest limitation: Top Star Ts is not a cleaner. Applied to a heavily soiled cockpit, it fixes the dirt in the care film and looks worse after three days than before. Anyone who tries this without pre-cleaning and is disappointed has not followed the workflow. The few minutes of Mzr pre-work are non-negotiable.

Third limitation: On high-gloss piano lacquer trim, Top Star Ts is the wrong candidate. Such high-gloss trim pieces are synthetic resin lacquer surfaces and not standard plastics. The right choice there is a quick detailer or a dedicated high-gloss plastic care product, which can also minimally conceal micro-scratches. Top Star Ts would not harm it, but it is on the wrong surface and does not work.

Silky matte surface after application of Koch-Chemie Top Star Ts 1000ml in the interior

Detailing1-Insight: Applying Top Star Ts with a microfiber cloth instead of an application sponge risks streaks. Microfiber absorbs too much product from the care film and distributes it unevenly. We use an open-pore sponge for application, and a long-fiber microfiber cloth only for buffing. And we let the car outgas for ten minutes with open doors after care before anyone gets in. This brings the subtle scent to the level appreciated in the finished interior, not the intense application moment.

Top Star Ts or Plast Star Pss

Plast Star Pss is the sister product for exterior use, Top Star Ts belongs in the interior. Both are silicone-free and Daimler-compliant, but use different carrier materials for different stresses.

If you want to care for the interior, the answer is clear: Top Star Ts. The protective film is designed for interior conditions, i.e., moderate temperatures, UV exposure through glass surfaces, and no direct weather exposure. It remains silky matte and does not yellow.

If you want to care for bumpers, door rubbers, exterior mirror housings or the plastic areas under the door rubbers, Plast Star Pss is the choice. The micro-emulsion binds more firmly to the exterior plastics, withstands weathering for months and prevents door seals from freezing in winter. On an exterior mirror housing, Top Star Ts lasts significantly less long, as it is optimized for interior stress and not for driving rain, frost and permanent UV radiation.

If you want to use both, i.e. complete detailing day work from outside to inside, the set of both bottles is worthwhile. The product range logic behind this is consistent: same manufacturer, same silicone oil-free philosophy, same Daimler conformity. The practical workflow is usually Plast Star Pss first on the exterior plastics and door rubbers, then the interior with Top Star Ts. This minimizes the outgassing risk from the antistatic agent in the interior, and the protective film on the outside has already dried during interior care.

A concrete if-then recommendation. If your car is outside and exposed to wind, rain and frost, you need Plast Star Pss on the exterior plastic every three to four months. If your car is in the garage and only knows interior stress, Top Star Ts every eight to twelve weeks is sufficient. If both stress profiles apply, i.e. frequent drivers with a premium interior, the clear separation into two care products is cheaper than a universal compromise, because neither film overlays the other.

Who Top Star Ts is really worth it for

If you want a black interior with high-gloss trim, a high-gloss cockpit spray is the right choice. If you want to maintain the OEM look and don't want to ruin your paint polish, use Top Star Ts. The purchasing decision is made precisely between these two poles.

Three profiles clearly fit the silicone-free, Daimler-compliant care. First, detail workers with a regular exterior-interior workflow who do not want to carry volatile silicone oils from the interior into the paint care. Second, car collectors and enthusiasts of everyday premium vehicles in OEM condition who want to preserve their matte finish character.

Thirdly, anyone who appreciates the pleasant, subtle scent and the antistatic property and doesn't want a cloud of cockpit spray when getting in.

On the other hand, if you want to quickly polish up a 15-year-old city car for a photo and know that the car will be gone in two years, you can get by with a cheap high-gloss spray from the discount store. Top Star Ts is long-term oriented care and not quick cosmetics.

Regarding packaging options: A one-liter bottle typically lasts for six to eight full interior treatments, depending on vehicle size and application dosage. Those who care for vehicles in workshop everyday life or in the detailing hobby take the 2x1-liter or 3x1-liter set, which is cheaper per bottle. The ten-liter variant is workshop level and usually not in stock. So, if you are planning a larger seasonal project in the coming weeks, check the stock and grab one of the three-liter variants, as availability there is most stable.
