  • Polish & paint cleaner by Dr. Wack A1: shine by hand

What does Dr. Wack's A1 paint care range offer? Six products for working on paint by hand: four pastes, from the pure abrasive version and the combo with wax to correction and sealing in one step, plus a heavy-duty cleaner and an iron fallout remover for prep.

A polish is a mildly abrasive care product that takes off a thin layer of the topmost paint surface, levelling out fine scratches, dull spots and weathering. Dr. Wack's A1 line from Ingolstadt covers this step with four such pastes that differ in cut, and adds two prep products. All of them are designed for hand application — put on with a pad or cloth, no machine.

    • Four pastes for four jobs. From the pure Kratzer Polish and the combo with wax to the Show & Shine version, the A1 line covers four levels of cut and care. You don't have to guess which product suits the condition of your paint.
    • Hand application, no machine. All four A1 pastes are made for applying with a pad or microfibre cloth. With the 500 ml bottle you'll get through a whole bonnet many times over, because each pass only needs a few grams.
    • Two prep products from the same series. The exterior heavy-duty cleaner and the Flugrost-Entferner Gel get the paint ready. That way the abrasive goes onto a properly clean surface instead of working dirt in.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We often see an abrasive going straight onto unwashed or only roughly rinsed paint. Grains of sand and dust still sitting on the surface then get dragged across the paint by the pad and leave exactly the fine scratches you were trying to remove. Wash and dry the paint first, and ideally clay it or use a heavy-duty cleaner to get rid of bonded contamination. Only once the surface feels smooth when you run your hand over it does the paste go on. That one step decides whether the result shines or ends up scratched.

What makes Dr. Wack's A1 paint care stand out

The A1 line is hand paint care for everyday use, not for no-compromise machine correction. That's exactly where its strength — and its limit — lies.

A1 is Dr. Wack's all-round car care line from Ingolstadt and treats paint as part of a complete care system, from washing to polishing to sealing. The line's four pastes aren't pro cutting systems with multiple cut stages, but hand-workable products for fine scratches, dull paint and that extra gloss before an appointment. The common denominator is predictability: stable formulas, Made in Germany, and an application that works without specialist knowledge.

At the core of any product like this is its abrasiveness — the cut of the abrasives it contains. A coarse paste removes more paint and takes out deeper defects, but leaves fine marring of its own that has to be refined with a finer product. A fine formula gives instant gloss but can't get at deep scratches. The A1 line grades that cut across its four products, so there's a suitable stage for most everyday paint conditions.

One point that often gets lost: A1 draws a clean line between pure correction and correction with a protective element. The Kratzer Polish only works — it doesn't protect. The Polish & Wax and the Speed Polish also bring carnauba wax and lay down a protective layer in the same pass. If you know that difference, you choose with purpose rather than by feel, and save yourself a step at the end. That clean split is exactly what makes choosing within the line easy.

How paint condition changes over the years matters too. Young, well-kept paint only needs a light refresh; ten-year-old paint with weathering and car-wash holograms calls for more cut. With its four stages, the A1 line covers both ends, from the fresh lease car to the used car that's getting on a bit, without you having to switch brands. That's the practical value of a graded series over a single all-purpose paste.

The six A1 paint care products in detail

The category is made up of four pastes with graded cut and two prep products. Each has a clearly defined job in the care routine.

The A1 "Kratzer Polish" is the line's pure abrasive version. It's silicone-free, comes in a 50 ml tube and works fine scratches and swirls out of paint and hard plastic surfaces rather than just masking them. Because it has no protective element, always follow it with a sealant or wax. The small size suits spot repairs on individual scratches.

The A1 "Polish & Wax" Polish is the combo with carnauba. In 500 ml, it refreshes the paint and protects it in the same pass, saving you a separate wax step. It's the right choice for well-kept everyday paint that needs a bit of gloss plus protection, without deep defects to correct.

The A1 "Speed Polish" Car Polish is the all-in-one car polish for a quick pass. Also with carnauba wax and in 500 ml, it polishes the paint up in one step and lays down a protective layer. It belongs to A1's Speed series, which is built for quick maintenance care, and is ideal if you'd rather look after your car regularly at short intervals than rarely and laboriously.

The A1 "ULTIMA Show & Shine Polish" Polish is the most advanced product in the line. It's solvent-free, comes in a 250 ml bottle and corrects fine scratches and weathered areas while sealing at the same time. It's the series' show finish for anyone wanting maximum gloss by hand before a meet or a sale.

Then there are the two prep products. The A1 "ALL in ONE" Heavy-duty cleaner (exterior) in 500 ml shifts bugs, bird droppings, sap and tar and creates the clean base before polishing can even get to work. The A1 Flugrost-Entferner Gel complements it where iron particles are involved. Both belong in the same category because they come before the care step, not because they create gloss themselves.

    Why prep decides the result

Even the best abrasive fails on paint that isn't clean. That's why every good session starts with decontamination.

Baked-on brake dust and iron fallout lodge in the paint as tiny iron particles that a normal wash won't shift. Work over them and you press these hard particles into the surface and create new scratches. That's exactly where the acid-free A1 "Flugrost-Entferner Gel" Iron Remover comes in. It clings well and has a built-in indicator, so it changes colour where it meets iron and dissolves the particles chemically before the pad can drag them across the paint.

The exterior heavy-duty cleaner deals with organic contamination. Bug residue, bird droppings, tree sap and tar are often so firmly stuck that a pad just smears them instead of removing them. The heavy-duty cleaner loosens these in advance, so the application that follows works on a flat surface. In 500 ml, it also covers larger areas like a complete side of the car in one go.

Only after these two steps does the actual gloss stage begin. The order isn't up for negotiation: wash, decontaminate with iron remover and heavy-duty cleaner, dry, then polish. Skip one of these steps and you risk a result that looks worse than where you started. That's why A1 deliberately puts the two prep products in the same category as the pastes, rather than treating them as a separate product world.

Applying the right A1 paste step by step

Every hand application follows the same basic routine. The difference lies in the cut of the product you choose, not in the technique.

Step one is a clean surface. The paint has to be washed, decontaminated and completely dry. Always work in the shade on cool paint, because on a panel heated up in the sun the product flashes off too fast and can't be worked evenly any more. Mentally split the car into sections of about half a square metre so you can work each area under control.

Step two is application. Put a small amount, about the size of a pea, onto a clean applicator pad and spread it over the section in overlapping, straight passes. Don't work in circles, because circular movements create the typical holograms that show up later in sunlight. Work it in with light, even pressure until the product turns slightly translucent. With the Kratzer Polish you can press a bit harder on individual scratches; with the ULTIMA Show & Shine, light pressure is enough.

Step three is buffing off. Take off the drying product with a clean, dry microfibre towel and bring out the gloss. Turn the towel regularly so removed paint and residue don't end up back on the surface. With the versions that have no wax, i.e. the Kratzer Polish, a sealant goes on afterwards. Allow about 90 to 120 minutes by hand for a whole mid-size car, depending on paint condition and the stage you've chosen.

How A1 compares with other brands

A1 paint care sits in the solid middle of the hand-applied products. Put honestly, it's neither the cheapest entry-level product nor a pro correction system.

Compared with basic entry-level pastes from the DIY store, A1 scores with its clear four-product grading and its design for both paint and hard plastics. Instead of a single all-purpose paste, you get a line with a suitable cut for whatever condition your paint is in. Compared with specialist detailing brands and their multi-stage cutting systems, A1 is deliberately kept simpler: less choice, but no need to match cut and finish stages precisely.

Dr. Wack's real strength is predictability. The formulas have been stable for years, Made in Germany in Ingolstadt, and the products behave reliably the same. If you work by hand and want a system that works without surprises, you're better off here than with constantly changing trend products. The line doesn't promise miracles, just a result you can follow at a manageable effort.

The clear limit: A1 isn't made for no-compromise paint correction with a machine polisher across several cutting stages, or for multi-year ceramic coatings. Deep scratches that go down to the base and large-scale hologram removal belong in the hands of machine work with specialist abrasives. For hand care of everyday paint, though — from a quick refresh to a show finish — the A1 line covers everything you need. That honest positioning is part of what this category promises in terms of advice.

Which A1 polish is right for you

If you're starting out with A1 paint care, choose by the condition of your paint and how much effort you want to put in. The four stages are easy to match up.

If your paint has visible fine scratches and swirls you want to work out properly, the "Kratzer Polish" is the right place to start. A sealant goes on afterwards, because it doesn't bring any protection itself. If you want gloss and protection in a single pass without correcting deep defects, grab the Polish & Wax or, if you look after your car regularly and quickly, the Speed Polish from the Speed series.

If you're after maximum gloss before a meet or a sale, the ULTIMA Show & Shine Polish is the one. It corrects and seals in one step and delivers the line's most elaborate finish by hand. In every case, the exterior heavy-duty cleaner — plus the Flugrost-Entferner Gel if there's iron contamination — belongs in your prep, because without a clean base every product falls short of what it can do.

You'll find all six products together in this polish category. If you want to round off your care beyond that, take a look at the Dr. Wack "A1" overview, with washing, interior and sealing from one maker. And if you want to get to know Dr. Wack as a brand, the Dr. Wack range shows the lines for car, motorcycle and glass side by side. That way you can build a complete care routine from predictable, material-friendly products, covering everything from the wash to hand-polished gloss.
