Motorcycle wheel cleaner: Biker's Felgen-Teufel, acid-free with a pH-neutral gel formula

What is the Biker's Felgen-Teufel? An acid-free, pH-neutral wheel cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH (pH 6.5 to 7.5) — built for motorcycle wheels and their material mix of anodised aluminium, steel spokes, carbon parts and clear-coated surfaces. It works by chemical chelation: sodium thioglycolate (CAS 367-51-1) turns iron(III) ions from baked-on brake dust into water-soluble complexes — you see it in the colour indicator shifting from light green through violet to red-brown. Maximum dwell time 3 to 5 minutes. Strictly off-limits on bare, mirror-polished aluminium and black chromated parts.

Biker's Felgen-Teufel® is the motorcycle-specific member of the TUGA wheel cleaner family. Where the Alu-Teufel Spezial Grün was built mainly for car wheels, the Biker's Felgen-Teufel goes after the material headaches you only get on a bike: anodised aluminium rim flanges, steel spokes carrying load at single points, carbon wheel sections on sport machines, and sensitive clear-coat seals that take a lot of UV because nothing covers them.

The chemistry is a close relative of the green Alu-Teufel: the cleaner works in a tightly balanced pH window of 6.5 to 7.5 — pH-neutral, neither acidic nor alkaline. That neutrality is the whole basis of how gentle it is, because neither anodised layers nor sensitive carbon clear coats get chemically attacked.

The active ingredient is sodium thioglycolate — a reducing agent aimed specifically at inorganic iron(III) compounds, the kind you get from brake disc and pad wear. When the gel hits the brake dust, the thioglycolate kicks off chelation: the molecules close around the iron ion like a crab's claws (hence "chelate", Greek for crab claw), reduce water-insoluble iron(III) to water-soluble iron(II) and lock it into a red-violet complex. The colour shift from light green through violet to red-brown is your visual indicator that it is working.

The thixotropic gel consistency (non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants plus xanthan thickener) stops the product from running straight off vertical rim beds. It stays put, wraps up the organic road grime and lets the sodium thioglycolate work on the inorganic brake dust undisturbed — which matters on bike wheels, where the spoke geometry gives it a lot of surface to cling to.

• Carbon wheel safe — the big one for sport bikes. Unlike acidic wheel cleaners, which can chemically reactivate exposed carbon fibre ends where the clear coat is damaged, the pH-neutral Biker's Felgen-Teufel is safe on carbon wheels with intact clear coat. On modern sport machines running BST or Marchesini carbon wheels it is the only safe call.
• Steel spokes and aluminium rim flange in one pass. Classic bike wheels with steel spokes and an aluminium rim flange (typical on enduros, classic machines and touring bikes) are a material mix that goes wrong fast with aggressive cleaners. The pH-neutral mechanism works just as well on both, without going after the spoke nipples or the inside of the rim.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The biggest efficiency loss we see with the Biker's Felgen-Teufel is people spraying it onto wet wheels straight after the pre-wash. The water sitting on the rim dilutes the gel immediately — concentration drops below the working range, you burn through 50 percent more product and get no extra cleaning for it. Do it the other way round: rinse the wheel down with the pressure washer, blow it off with compressed air or wipe it with a dry microfibre, and only then lay the gel down. The second classic mistake, on bikes with an open brake setup sitting right behind the wheel (typical on enduros and naked bikes): spraying the gel straight into the caliper. The surfactants pull the grease out of the piston seals, and you only notice weeks later as lost brake pressure. On sport machines with carbon-ceramic brakes give them 45 minutes to cool, otherwise the gel flashes off on 200-degree calipers in seconds instead of the minutes you are counting on.

Rinsed and dried wheel, spray from the bottom up, 3 to 5 minutes dwell, rinse off with pressure.

The standard workflow starts by checking wheel temperature. On sport machines with heavy braking and carbon-ceramic discs, wait at least 30 to 45 minutes after the ride; on touring bikes with conventional brakes, 15 to 20 minutes. In direct sun, roll the bike into the shade — black sport wheels can sit at 50 degrees after 10 minutes of summer sun.

Rinse the wheel down with the pressure washer — loose road dirt, bug splatter on the outer rim and chain fling all come off there. Then dry the surface with compressed air or a dry microfibre. This step matters: a wet rim bed dilutes the gel on contact and drops the concentration below the working range.

Spray the Biker's Felgen-Teufel on evenly from 20 to 30 centimetres away, working bottom to top. Direction is critical: work top-down and you get a concentration gradient and run marks. On steel-spoke wheels, put the gel deliberately at the spoke roots and where the spokes meet the rim — that is where the most stubborn brake dust collects.

Let it dwell three to five minutes. The colour shift (light green → violet → red-brown) shows you where the brake dust has released and when the reaction is done. On heavily crusted spots, agitate during the dwell with a soft detailing brush or a dedicated motorcycle wheel brush — circular movements, no pressure, and the gel spreads more evenly.

Then rinse it off completely with a sharp pressure jet. First bottom to top, which releases the lower rim edge, then with clean water top to bottom, which carries every last residue down and out. Rinse the back of the wheel and the gaps between spokes and rim flange properly too — that is where the dissolved iron complex gathers, and if it dries there it can bleed rust marks.

Carbon, paint, chrome and steel spokes yes. Mirror-polished aluminium and black chromate no.

The Biker's Felgen-Teufel is cleared for the broad material range you find on bike wheels. Carbon wheels with intact clear coat (BST, Marchesini, Rotobox), painted aluminium wheels, clear-coated steel-spoke wheels, chrome rim flange edges, multi-piece sport wheels with aluminium spokes and carbon shells, powder-coated steel wheels.

Two material groups are strictly out. First, bare mirror-polished aluminium (often on tuned sport bikes or classic cruisers): the pH may be neutral, but sodium thioglycolate in direct contact with bare aluminium can leave a dull oxidised film. Mask off polished rim edges or unprotected flange interiors with tape before you start.

Second, black chromated parts (often on premium sport bikes like the Ducati Panigale V4 or BMW S1000RR). That thin chromate layer reacts to any reducing chemistry — even pH-neutral thioglycolate can leave dull patches after a longer dwell. Keep a safe distance from wheels or caliper parts like that.

On classic spoked wheels with galvanised spokes (typical on BMW R boxer models and older touring machines) it is fine, as long as the zinc layer is intact. Where the zinc is damaged or bare steel shows through, sort the spokes out first — otherwise the cleaner speeds up corrosion at exactly those spots.

Off-label, the Biker's Felgen-Teufel is increasingly used on e-bike wheels — pedelecs with mid-drive motors run similar wheel materials to motorcycles, and disc brakes throw plenty of dust. The pH-neutral formula is easy on the electrics — just never spray it straight at battery contacts or the display.

March pre-season, peak touring season, October lay-up.

Demand for motorcycle wheel cleaner in the DACH market follows a strict bell curve. The first peak is March and April — pre-season prep. If the bike sat all winter, the wheels carry a baked-on mix of standing-water corrosion, oxidised brake dust and storage grime. Before the first ride out, it all gets decontaminated properly.

The second peak runs May to September — the main touring season. On weekly rides of 200 to 500 kilometres, brake dust builds up faster than on a car, because bike pads generally work harder. Clean weekly and you never let it escalate into baked-on dust that fights back.

The third peak is October — lay-up. Before storage the wheels get cleaned properly and often sealed afterwards, so nothing corrodes over the winter break. The Biker's Felgen-Teufel is the standard step before that sealant — it decontaminates without upsetting what goes on next.

The 1 L spray bottle at around 20 euros gives you roughly 12 to 15 goes with weekly bike care — about one full touring season on one bike. In the 5 L canister at around 60 euros the price drops to about 12 euros per litre, which is clearly the better maths with several bikes or in professional use.

Off-label uses: cleaning bicycle cassettes and derailleurs (sodium thioglycolate goes after the brake dust and iron deposits there just the same), industrial flash-rust removal on metal components, trial bike wheels with special demands. Important: the cleaner has no degreasing properties for bearing grease — if you are cleaning cassettes, work with a dedicated degreaser first.

Safety note: the product falls under GHS07 with the hazard statements H302 (harmful if swallowed) and H319 (causes serious eye irritation). Nitrile gloves and eye protection are mandatory. On skin contact, rinse thoroughly with water straight away — thioglycolate compounds can trigger allergies with frequent exposure. Correct disposal goes through the AVV waste code for iron complex solutions — never household waste or a normal drain. On carbon wheels with clear-coat damage, get the coat repaired before you clean, or the fibres will fray.

Before each application, check the wheel temperature. For sport bikes with high braking loads and carbon-ceramic brakes, wait at least 30 to 45 minutes after the ride. For touring bikes with conventional brake systems, wait 15 to 20 minutes. If exposed to direct sunlight, move the bike into the shade — black sport rims can reach 50 degrees within 10 minutes.

Pre-rinse the wheel roughly with a high-pressure water jet — this will remove loose road grime and insect remains from the outer sides of the wheels. Then dry the surface with compressed air or a dry microfiber cloth. This step is important: a wet rim bed immediately dilutes the cleaning gel and reduces the concentration below the effective range.

Spray Biker's Felgen-Teufel evenly from 20 to 30 centimeters away, from bottom to top. For steel-spoked wheels, specifically apply the gel at the spoke roots and at the spoke-rim transition. Allow to act for three to five minutes — the active indicator color change (light green to violet to reddish-brown) visually shows the completed reaction.

For heavily encrusted areas, agitate in circles during the exposure time with a soft detailing brush or a specialized motorcycle wheel brush — no pressure. Then rinse thoroughly with a strong high-pressure water jet until no residue remains — first from bottom to top, then with clear water from top to bottom. Also rinse the back of the wheel and the areas between the spokes and the rim horn thoroughly.

Notes: Strictly excluded for unpainted high-gloss polished aluminum (tuning sport bikes, classic cruisers) and black chrome-plated components (Ducati Panigale V4, BMW S1000RR) — sodium thioglycolate causes dull oxidation. NEVER spray directly into brake calipers or open bearings — the surfactants dissolve lubricating greases from the seals, visible only weeks later as a loss of brake pressure.
